Students also began reading mystery novels, including Nate the Great, Cam Jansen, Encyclopedia Brown, A-Z Mysteries and Hank, the Cowdog. They participated in group discussions and wrote journal entries. Most students will read a second book, which may include books in other series, including Jigsaw Jones, Nancy Drew and/or Hardy Boys.
After taking their fingerprints, and examining the patterns the previous week, they went on to try to “lift” a fingerprint from a plastic surface. After applying lotion to their fingers, they made a print, then dusted it with powder. They lifted the print with tape and attached it to paper for viewing. You may find them “lifting” your fingerprints from surfaces in your home!
Every year students need to practice a number of safety drills. Last week they participated in a Bus Evacuation Drill, as well as a procedure for securing the building. The previous week they did a Building Evacuation Drill, and this week we will probably practice the fourth one, which is “Clear the Halls.” If you have any questions about these drills, please feel free to call or email.
This year the 4 Winds theme is Cycles, beginning with insects. Both classes will participate in the first class during this next week. Students have also been reading about insects, taking notes in their science journals and watching videos to further their understanding on this topic. Each month we will try to provide an introduction and follow up to the 4 Winds Class.
In math, fourth graders are reviewing math facts and strategies for multiplying two-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers. This includes the use of manipulatives, arrays, open arrays, and breaking the problem apart, using the distributive property. {Example: 12 x 6 = (10 x 6) + (2 x 6)}. Practice happens on the iPads, as well as through games and activities. Students also have challenge sheets in individual folders and Try-A-Tile cards to practice different levels of multiplication and division. It is important that students are spending time each week practicing their math facts. The third grade program was recently explained in a letter home to parents.
