Wren Forbes, her mother Helen Whybrow, and a friend, Coco O'Connor, made a special presentation to the third and fourth graders on June 10th. They explained how the sheep are sheared and the wool is cleaned. They brought in different types of wool, and students were able to feel the difference in the fibers from different breeds of sheep. Students were able to "card" the wool, combing the fibers with both hand tools and a drum carder. They were each given a piece to stretch out, and then they tried their hand at spinning it on a small portable wheel. This proved to be much harder than it looked! The final activity was to act out the whole process from shearing to creating a finished article of clothing. It was a wonderful experience! |
