On Thursday, October 23, the third and fourth grade students were treated to a great performance by Marcus Roberts & the New Jazz Generation at the Flynn Theater. Roberts, who has been blind since he was five, has been at the forefront in the development of adaptive technology for blind composers. He and his 10-piece band introduced the students to different instruments and provided them with a brief history of jazz. All these organisms play important roles in the flow of energy and matter through an ecosystem. Many soil critters act as decomposers, breaking down plant and animal materials and returning them as nutrients to the soil where other living things may use them again. The soil is a rich ecosystem teeming with life in a complex food web." (Copyright © Four Winds Nature Institute –7/14) The students spent time learning about the ecosystem, and observing worms indoors, before heading outside to find their own examples of "Life in the Dirt." On Tuesday, September 30, third and fourth grade students joined kindergarten students to learn more about Chase Brook. We hiked up the Nature Trail, and then continued beyond the turn. There we met up with Laura Dlugolecki, a Stormwater Specialist, working for the Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District, and Jamie Masterson, a Fish Biologist, working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The students were fascinated as Jamie “stunned” brook trout, and then counted and tagged them. Some students even took turns petting the fish! We also learned about erosion, and did some planting to hold back the soil.
