Students have continued to explore the Nature Trail and other areas around the school, both during science classes and 4 Winds. As we are studying ecosystems and interdependence, there have been some great opportunities to connect to the 4 Winds classes on insects and leaves. Our science program has also been completely integrated into our literacy program, and students have been reading and writing about these topics. The students learned about the plants and animals in forest ecosystems, including deciduous, coniferous and rain forests. They learned to identify the forest layers, comprised of the forest floor, shrubs, understory, canopy and emergent trees, and drew pictures to illustrate their learning. They played predator (a card game) and constructed food webs, labeling the producers, the consumers (herbivores, carnivores and omnivores) and the decomposers. They delved more deeply into an understanding of the producers and the process of photosynthesis, again writing and drawing about their learning. They also watched a number of videos and learned some songs to help remember the information. Throughout their time outside, they also continued to think about our Nature Trail Project, and what topics interested them the most. They will eventually research a topic and create a new sign for the trail.
