On Tuesday we focused on the importance of kindness, using two books, and two follow up activities. We read What Does It Mean To Be Kind? by Rana DiOrio and Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson, each concluding with a discussion. Students then created a Kindness Quilt, illustrating two squares of paper with examples of how to be kind. Students were also asked to squeeze a tube of toothpaste onto a paper plate, and then try to put it back inside!! Ask your child about this activity and what they learned.
In another group challenge, they were given one square piece of aluminum foil and 10 chenille stems (formerly called pipe cleaners). Again, they were only told to use their imagination and create "something." With both activities the students had to share ideas, communicate clearly, listen actively and sometimes compromise. Their images and creations are pictured below.
Students also took “Mystery Pictures” around the school, and hope to create slideshows, challenging their classmates to figure out where the pictures were taken.

A good part of Friday morning was spent outside, participating in a Nature Trail Sign Scavenger Hunt. Students worked with a partner, to read some of the information on our beautiful new signs, looking for answers about life along the trail. Back inside, we discussed what they learned and which ones were especially challenging and/or interesting to find.
Ask your child about their favorite activities, and what they are looking forward to during the second week of school.
