We read and discussed a range of books, both nonfiction and historical fiction. Students participated in literature circles, and responded to the novels in their reading journals. After learning a little bit about various aspects of Vermont, students picked a topic to research further. They are writing reports, working on strong introductions, with “hooks” and topic sentences. The reports are connected to self selected projects, which include technology presentations, and a wide range of artistic creations.
We read The Ox Cart Man and discussed life on the farm, as well as in the village. We baked bread, made butter, and dried apple rings, discussing the types of jobs children would have had and the division of labor in families. We are planning a couple of other crafts and demonstrations to end out unit. If you have any particular information or artifacts that you would like to share, please let us know.
